The railway was originally built between 1912 and 1926 to transport sugar cane.
This is a tropical volcanic landscape, characterized by lush rainforests and dramatic rock formations. Mount Liamuiga in the background is a dormant stratovolcano and the highest point on the island of Saint Kitts, with an elevation of 1156 meters above sea level.
The area the train travels through in the lowlands were originally covered by large sugarcane plantations.
