The Selknam people in the southern tip of South America, by the Magellan strait. They had harsh winters and sailed around on their canoes carrying their fire from one place to the next as one of these stamps shows.
Selknam women at work weaving a basket using dried wild reeds which grew in the sub-antarctic clima of Tierra del Fuego (The land of Fire). These baskets were incredibly durable and they used them to gather food such as wild berries, edible roots, shellfish and small fish or even birds eggs.
She is wrapped in a Guanaco skin cloak worn with the fur facing inward for insulation against the brutal Patagonian cold. She is also wearing a shell necklace.
A Selknam male decorated his body for the Hain - the ceremony through which boys became men. He is wearing a mask. They enjoyed scaring women pretending to be a bad spirit.
